KNU Workshop #10 - Solid Waste Management in the City of Erbil

Solid waste management is an essential service in any society. Before introducing the process, however, let's start with a discussion of the material being managed—solid waste. Solid waste refers to the range of garbage materials—arising from animal and human activities—that are discarded as unwanted and useless. Solid waste is generated from industrial, residential, and commercial activities in a given area, and may be handled in a variety of ways. As such, landfills are typically classified as sanitary, municipal, construction and demolition, or industrial waste sites. 

Waste can be categorised based on material, such as plastic, paper, glass, metal, and organic waste. Categorisation may also be based on hazard potential, including radioactive, flammable, infectious, toxic, or non-toxic wastes. Categories may also pertain to the origin of the waste, whether industrial, domestic, commercial, institutional, or construction and demolition.

Regardless of the origin, content, or hazard potential, solid waste must be managed systematically to ensure environmental best practices. As solid waste management is a critical aspect of environmental hygiene, it must be incorporated into environmental planning.

Solid waste management is defined as the discipline associated with control of generation, storage, collection, transport or transfer, processing and disposal of solid waste materials in a way that best addresses the range of public health, conservation, economic, aesthetic, engineering, and other environmental considerations.

In its scope, solid waste management includes planning, administrative, financial, engineering, and legal functions. Solutions might include complex inter-disciplinary relations among fields such as public health, city and regional planning, political science, geography, sociology, economics, communication and conservation, demography, engineering, and material sciences.

At the end of the workshop, participants would have the knowledge about the concept and technologies involved in waste management in the city and:

  1. What is solid waste management?
  2. What is waset generation?
  3. What is Integrated Solid Waste Management?
  4. How can this be implemented in the city of Erbil?

The participants will split into smaller groups of no more than 5 people to brainstorm ideas and build up steps for a strategy on how this can be done in Erbil, starting at our university campus.

Speakers’ Profile 

This is a dual scholar workshop and two of our scholars will host the workshop session.  

Dr Salah Farhan Sharif (ORCID Profile)  is an Assistant Professor of Industrial & Environmental Adviser at the Department of Environmental Engineering (DENE) at Knowledge University (KNU). He has worked for over 30 years in the construction industry, projects management, water and wastewater treatment and petroleum industrial pollution control. Dr Salah has worked for more than 17 years in the academic work including lecturing, consultancy and design, at Universities such as University of TechnologyUniversity of Baghdad and University of Anbar, more than 40 published papers3 conferences through the last 2 years and lecturing and research supervising for PhD and MSc students in different universities. I held many training courses in the fields of water and wastewater engineering, EIA, HSE and EMS through the Arabic Petroleum Training Institute (APTI-OAPEC) in different countries, e.g. Iraq, Sudan, Syria, and Libya.

Miss Shadan Rashid Abubaker (ORCID Profile)  is an Assistant Lecturer of Environmental Engineering , Quality Assurance at the College of Engineering (CE) at Knowledge University (KNU). She has worked for over 2 years in the Ministry of Environment in Erbil as an Environmental monitoring , During here work tough many laboratory and management courses in ministry of Environment. Miss Shadan  has worked for more than 3 years in the academic work including lecturing and Head of Quality assurance at Universities such as Salahaddin  University   and University of Knowledge, more than 5 published papers, Organizer in 3 conferences  at last years and research supervising for  2 students undergraduates  in Salahaddin universities. I held many training courses in the fields of Environments and laboratories  and EIA. During her working in knowledge university she took many  Appreciation Certificate from Erbil council, knowledge presidency, Knowledge ‘s Ministry of Quality Assurance(QA) and from Dean of colleges of Engineering.
