Number of times an academic paper is cited has become a major measure of its research impact. Research consumption has moved to digital online sources. Many researchers today have an online workflow from finding to publishing. Easy access online has become necessary to increase citation count for your research. A research article that is easily discovered online can affect readership, utilisation and citation count of your research. Now the global trends for measuring the quality of research papers are looking for individual authors' impact in terms of citations and rather than the whole Journal. However, increasing your citation count can also have a positive impact on your career because funding agencies often look at a combination of the number of papers and the number of citations when making grant decisions. Therefore it is vital to understand the Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) to increase the chance for your publication to be found and indexed.

Getting to grips with SEO can seem like a difficult task at first. We all know it is important to ensure that your research is discoverable on search engines and online journal platforms. There are millions of articles available online, so how do you make sure that your work can be easily found and read by interested and relevant researchers? What’s also essential for you to check is the number of times your works are cited. This directly influences how your research contributes to your chosen area of study.

SEO is simply the process of attempting to improve a web page’s search engine rankings. Google and other search engines prioritise content that it sees as interesting, high-quality, and relevant – displaying such content higher up on search rankings.

What does this mean for researchers? Well, the higher the ranking of your article, the more people will discover, read, and ultimately cite your research. The number of times your work is cited is important as well because it can indicate the impact that your research has on the field. There are several simple ways you can optimise your article for search engine rankings

This workshop will explore ways to inject SEO in the structure of your work so it is easily indexed. Participants attending the workshop will engage with the core aspects of the SEO concepts and working in groups towards optimising their future publication with these new concepts. Furthermore they will learn to;

  1. Work in groups to do easy SEO tasks.
  2. Work in groups to come up with title, abstract and keywords for their already published paper and reorganise it with these new Know Hows.
